SYMPTOMS >> FEVER (PYREXIA)

Fever is a medical symptom in which the internal body temperature is above normal. The feverish individual feels cold despite the increased body temperature, and is subject to increased heart rate, muscle tone and shivering, all of which are caused to counter the perceived subnormal temperature.

Fever is a common symptom of many medical conditions:
  • Infectious diseases
  • Skin inflammations
  • Tissue destruction
  • Drug fever
  • Cancers

Fever as such needs no treatment, but if it prolongs it might indicate the presence of a disease and needs prompt medical attention. Treatment is given to make the child feel better and thus more willing to drink to avoid dehydration.

Any infant with a temperature of 100.4° F (about 38° C) or higher should be seen by a doctor, as should older children with higher or recurring fevers or complaints of pain.

Interestingly, fever helps in fighting certain foreign bodies that cause infections.
